This is a BBQ at my school. This is a real Taiwan shrimp.

Ummmm....NO!!!!! Although Brian is probably braver than I am, and he wouldn't eat that.

The shrimp isn't really that bad. Granted -- you do have to peel off the outer shell. But it's still yummy shrimp.

I guess the problem is that we, Americans, would rather not have something looking at us as we're about to eat it.

Yeah Travis...that about sums it up. I actually really like shrimp, love it! I just haven't worked up the courage to eat it here, because you can see it looking at you. I'm actually pretty much a food coward...one time I made Dan and Tammy's coconut shrimp myself...and to save a little money I decided to shell and devein the shrimp myself. Well, after doing that I couldn't eat them....all I could think about was what it felt like and smelled like when I was shelling and deveining....which is crappy, really, because I love coconut shrimp!! Brian posted that picture so I wasn't there at that BBQ, but I like the BBQ tofu...the larger round thing in the photo. I have pretty much figured out my food coward tendencies in Taiwan....and they have to do with meat. I actually really like lots of things here...like noodles and rice.....cooked any way....and I loooooove stir-fried veggies. I also really like the bread and other things. I'm just really afraid of the meat....it is just hard to eat it when you can tell where it came from...or when you can see it's brothers and sisters in there waiting for their turn to be dinner. I like the anonymity of buying my meat from Walmart...unrecognizably packaged, and ready to cook...no dis-assembly required!!

Hi Krista, what advice can you give us for stir frying vegetables. I'm always wondering exactly what to mix together to make a good sauce. Any good hints?

You know, it has been so easy here with the stir-fry...because you can just buy the sauces ready-made at the store! They sell some stuff here at Costco that is called Ginger Teriyaki BBQ sauce....and it is excellent!! All you have to do is fry up your veggies and then pour some in. But I do know that before I found Costco, all I would do is fry up the veggies in a little oil with lots of garlic (I'm not kidding, if you want authentic Taiwanese flavor you have to use clovesssssss of it) and then add some soy sauce and pepper at the end. It is pretty simple, but really good. If you want really simple and good fried rice, you just do it that way...with your onions and garlic fried up first (the wok is really awesome, and easy to use....you should definately use one) and then push them to the side and do your egg, and then add in the other veggies (bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, peas, whatever you like...we use everything) and saute them just a little, because they are better crunchy...then you add in maybe a tablespoon of olive oil and your rice (this works better if your rice is not sticky...and also if it is cold), then you add in some soy sauce and pepper. We also like it a little hotter, so we add chili peppers...but Madi generally won't eat it that way...so it just depends. I have become a vegetable junkie here...we have stir-fry three times a week. I guess the thing is that you just experiment with it until you like the flavor. Look for Chinese sauces in your grocery store, I haven't bought one that I don't like yet....so you're pretty safe. Also, Madi loves broccoli, so it is a great way to get her to eat lots of it. I'm not much of a chef...but the stir-fry thing is really great because it is fast and easy...you can be ready to eat in ten minutes because you basically just have to wash and chop up veggies...and then frying them is really quick. I hope that helps!

Oh! And Dan and Tammy have an awesome sweet and sour sauce recipe for their Gu Lao Rou.....it is so tasty!!! You'll have to get them to make it for you!!

Krista, that sounds so good. We haven't made Guo lau roo (sp?) for quite a while. That sauce is very good though; however, we have modified the orginal recipe to match our own taste. The orginial receipe came from Tammy Fei (Fung?) or something. She was one of Travis' Chinese girlfriends. You'll have to ask him about her sometime. She was a "work of art."
